Why I built Outage.info

Better information, less panic.

I’m Christopher W. Corwin. I have a B.S. in Meteorology, and I work in power-system operations.

I built Outage.info to help households prepare for power outages with better information and less panic. Most people think about backup power for the first time when the lights are already out, which is the hardest moment to make a good decision. Planning ahead, with honest numbers, makes the choices simpler and safer.

What this site is

Outage.info is an independent planning resource. It offers a transparent backup-power calculator and plain-English guides for common situations, with links to official public-safety sources where specific safety claims are made.

What this site is not

  • It is not affiliated with any electric utility, government agency, emergency-management agency, or product manufacturer.
  • It does not provide live outage maps or restoration information. For a current outage, check your electric utility’s official outage map or app.
  • Outage.info does not provide licensed electrical or engineering services, and it is not a product-testing lab. Nothing here is an electrical design, a medical recommendation, or a safety certification.

For anything involving home wiring, transfer switches, or hardwired equipment, work with a licensed electrician. For powered medical equipment, work with the device manufacturer and your healthcare provider.

How the site is funded

Outage.info carries no ads. In the future, it may earn commissions from clearly disclosed affiliate links and may offer a small paid household outage-planning product. Details are in the affiliate disclosure.
